What is a case study
the detailed investigation of a single individual or small group of people
What do case studies aim to be as much as possible
scientific in their approach when investigating. objective and systematic methods are used to collect data
Why are case studies generally only made up of small number of individuals
There are only very few individuals who present with a specific rare behaviour
What methods can be used to obtain in depth qualitative data in case studies
interviews and observations
What methods can be used to obtain quantitative data in case studies
questionnaires or experiments
Advantages of case studies
Able to study niche and irreplicable behaviour, researcher focuses on very few people so greater depth of time spent and data collected
Disadvantages of case studies
conducting a longitudinal case study is subject to willingness of participant, findings may not be generalised to everyone, reseacher bias
