Facilitation definition
Positive effects due to the presence of others
According to zajonac, there are 4 others present in sport….
- An audience- just watches
- Competitors- are in comfort with the performer
- Social reinforcers- encourage or criticize performance
- Co-actors- are doing the sport alongside you
Zajonac model
Others present
Passive. Interactive
Audience.Co-actors. Competitive. social
Co-actors. Reinforcers
Increased arousal
Increased drive
Probability of dominant
response
Complex task. Novice Expert or simple task
INHIBITION. FACILITATION
Effects of the audience and co-actors
Cause an increase in arousal due to their presence but are passive as they are not involved in the event
Effects of competitions and social reinforcers
Have a more direct impact as giving encouraging or causing distractions
Effect of presence of co-actors in a simple task
Help as arousal is raised
Level of arousal in complex skills
Needs to be low to allow the performer to concentrate on the skills
Performance and dominant response of a EXPERT performer
-Well learned/accurate dominant response, under pressure this response becomes automatic, simple and correct
-This may lead to positive performances as facilitation occurs
Eg. The roar of the home crowd
Performance and the dominant response of a NOVICE performer
-Poorly learned/inaccurate response, under pressure this response becomes automatic, complex and incorrect
Eg. Choosing the correct response to a powerful serve
What is the Evaluation Apprehension?
- ‘the fear of being judged’
- the negative influence of others if the performer feels they are being judged
- high arousal created from being watched by important/expert people
- made worse if: audience is known to us, lacking confidence
How to prevent social inhibition?
- Get the players familiar with playing in front of an crowd. Can be done by training with a distraction or building up the audience.
- Gradually introducing elevation. May start with informal chats progressing to statistical analysis.
- Lower arousal levels. Use visualization and other stress management techniques
