A
Motivation in the drive to succeed. Can come form within (intrinsic) or from an outside source (extrinsic)

Intrinsic motivation
A
- It comes from within
- the satisfaction of successfully completing a task, pride, self satisfaction

A
- from an outside source
- praise from the coach, other players, scouts

Extrinsic rewards: tangible
A
Physical, can be touched. Eg. Trophies, certificates

A
Non-physical, eg. Praise, concern, encouragement

Intrinsic motives
A
- Intrinsic rewards are more effective, stronger and long lasting
- they give more satisfaction and pride

Extrinsic motives
A
- attract to the activity and provide early motivation
- if used to much may undermine value of activity, decreasing motivation
- may create pressure on players to achieve and if they don’t get reward, motivation can be lost. Same pressure creates cheating.

Methods used to motivate by coaches
A
- offering rewards early on
- making the activity fun
- pointing out health benefits
