Benefits of goal setting
- Helps increase motivation. Players can become ‘task persistent’. Player experiences pride and satisfaction when goals are reached. Increases intrinsic motivation
- Helps improve confidence as the goals are being reached
- Helps sustain effort. Player focuses on goal
Outcome goal
Set against the performance of others and based on a result eg. Winning a trophy
Task oriented goal
Getting a better performance
Eg. Athlete could achieved their goal even if they do not win as their technique to improve had been reached
Performance goal def
Athlete sets a goal to better their own performance rather than comparing to others eg. Achieving a PB
Process goal
Based on improving technique
Eg. To achieve best time, swimmer may improve and focus on training their arm actions
Factors to consider when setting goals
SMART Principle
Specific- goals should be clear and precise
Measurable- form if assessment should occur eg. Before and after PB
Achievable- performer should be able to reach their goal
Realistic- goals should be within reach to ensure motivation is not lost
Time-bound- establish clear time frames
