social explainations of criminal behav. Flashcards
What are the three social explainations for criminal behaviour?
-self-fulfilling prophecy
-labelling theory
-social learning theory
what are the key parts of social learning theory?
attention, retention, reproduction, motivation(intrinsic/extrinsic), vicarious reinforcement,
what is the different between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?
-intrinsic is self motivation by taking pride in self for commiting crime
-extrinsic is motivation from peers
What causes a self-fulfilling prophecy?
society predicts an individual will be a criminal based on current anti-social behaviours resulting in the ind caving to society’s pressure and fulfilling the prophecy by commiting crimes
what is labelling theory?
causes reoffending by leaving a label of ‘criminal’ placed on ind by society due to past crimes of ind or people they associate with causing pressure created by societal label to live up to label and continue criminal acts
critical eval of social explainations:
raine et al: lower levels of glucose metabolism pre-frontal cortex in NGRI vs control so agg crime could be biological not social
pardini: people with small amygdala are 3 times more likely to exhibit aggression
supporting eval of social explainations:
anderson: found college students that listened to violent songs were more likely to act agg than those who listened to similar but non-violent songs
lieberman: found juveniles who previously commited crimes more likely to reoffend than those who didn’t
