brain function aggression evaluation Flashcards
Raine et al.
found lower neural activity in pre-frontal cortex and asymmetric function of amygdala in impulse murderers compared to non-murderers , meaning amygdala is important in control of aggression
ignores nurture
focuses solely on brain structure and damage as causes of aggression but ignores other environmental factors such as upbringing or social class
Phineas Gage case study
tamping iron lodged through his skull in an explosion causing damage to his pre-frontal cortex resulting in a change in behaviours to irresponsible and aggressive afterwards
animal experiments
most brain function experiments take place using animals to avoid ethical issues such as risk of harm from inciting aggression in pps so the results might not be generalisable to humans as it isn’t representative of human brain functions and aggression
conclusion
useful- can lead to drug treatments for aggression so ind. can have a normal life uninhibited by aggressive behaviours
however- stigma may lead society to be able to discriminate against people with irregular brain functions due to the assumption that they could be aggressive or violent
