biological psychology classic study Flashcards
what was the biological classic study?
Raine’s study
Raine’s sample:
-41 murderers pleading NGRI (39m 2f), mean age 31.2
-41 control pps matched on age, gender and sz diagnosis, mean age 31.7
what were all pps two weeks prior to the brain scans?
medication free
Procedure:
-10 mins CPT focusing on a presentation of blurred numbers
-injected with a radioactive tracer
-32 mins CPT while the tracer metabolised in active brain areas
-PET scan
what does CPT stand for?
continuous performance task
two cortical brain areas the glucose metabolism was lower in NGRI results than controls and what it causes:
-pre-frontal cortex (self-control, remorse)
-parietal areas (verbal ability and educational underachievement)
what was the difference between amygdala function in NGRI and controls?
-assymetrical glucose metabolism in the two halves of the amygdala with lower in left and higher in right side
-bonus: right amygdala is responsible for fear stimuli
improvements for raine’s study:
Raine could change the CPT from a blurred numbers task to viewing pictures of cvrime scenes in order to increase validity by getting a more relavant mental reaction to violent crime.
two supporting studies for raine:
-montag et al: fMRI of gamers showed lower activity in response to pics of neg emotions so more agg as their brains struggle proccessing violence
-tateno et al: CAT scans showed post trauma agg was sig in brain injury pps than control w non-physical trauma
two critical studies for raine:
-Mazur: males fight less as they get older as they already found a partner so evolution is the reason for agg, not brain injury
-bandura: found agg as result of observation and immitation, not brain injury
