schizophrenia neurotransmitter evaluation Flashcards
carlsson (2000)
ppl given amphetamines have higher dopamine release in basal ganglia than control so were more likely to experience sz symptoms
seeman (1993)
reports density of receptors such as D4 are 6x greater in sz than non-sz and this sensitivity increase to neurotransmitter leads to psychotic symptoms more than dopamine excess
depatie and lal (2001)
giving ppl drugs that increase dopamine production does not create sz symptoms as would be expected if excess dopamine caused sz, so it’s not the only explaination of sz
more scientific
number of receptors can be checked with a scan so provides objective way to show neurotransmitters as cause of sz
ignores individual difference
social situations etc. could cause sz so not a full explanation of sz symptoms cause
internal validity
can establish cause and effect with how dopamine causes sz symptoms
conclusion
weakness of social control and strength of predicting treatment using typical or atypical drugs
