Cognitive psychology classic study Flashcards
what is the cognitive classical study?
Baddley’s study
aim of baddley’s study:
study influence of acoustic and semantic simmiarity on recall in STM and LTM
sample:
72 pps, volunteer sample from a cambridge psychology research panel
what kind of measures were used in baddley’s study?
independant measures
list A:
10 acoustically similar words
list B:
10 acoustically dissimilar words
list C:
10 semantically similar words
list D:
10 semantically dissimilar words
list trial procedure:
four trials, done on the slide projector w/ 3 sec for each word and 2 sec slide change over then asked asked to recall the words they learned in order after distraction task
distraction task :
6 8-digit recalls presented 1 digit per sec
last thing pps did:
15 minutes self-paced digit copying task
conclusion:
-LTM impaired by semantic similarity
-although info can be encoded acoustically to STM,needs semantic meaning linked to be retained LTM
improvements:
change sample to ppl with no background in psych such as opportunuty sample from local park to increase generalisability
