Loftus and Palmer Flashcards
aim of experiment 1:
see if leading questions would influence speed estimates of a vehicle given by a witness
sample of experiment 1:
45 university students split into 5 groups of 9
method of experiment 1:
lab experiment
why were both experiments lab experiments?
artificial conditions bc used clips of car crashes(1) and a short film of multiple car accidents(2)
procedure of experiment 1:
-all shown 7 clips of car crashes in diff orders
-all asked to give account of the crashes and fill in a questionnaire
-only diff between groups was word used in critical q: ‘about how fast were the cars going when they —- each other’
what were the different words in experiment 1’s critical q?
smashed, collided, bumped, hit, contacted
experiment 1 results:
smashed ellicited highest speed ‘40.5 mph’ and ‘contacted’ ellicited the slowest speed ‘31.8’
aim of experiment 2:
work out which of the two concs was true by trying to see if pps would remember something that wasn’t real
sample of experiment 2:
150 uni students split into 3 groups of 50
procedure of experiment 2:
- shown short film of a multiple car accident
- recieved questionnaire asking to describe the accident
-given critical q w/ word manipulated:
‘how fast were the cars going when they —- each other?’
length of car accident film in experiment 2:
less than one minute w/ 4 sec of actual accident
words used in crit q of experiment 2:
hit, smashed or no verb
procedure of experiment 2 part 2:
-1 week later pps asked ‘did you see any broken glass?’ yes or no’ when there was none
results of experiment 2:
32% said they saw glass in smashed group but only 14% in hit group and 12% in no verb control group
overall conc:
EWT effected by info recieved after the event such as leading questions changing speed estimates.
