Soc 16 Flashcards
3 main functions or the CV system
Distribution of blood around the body, clotting blood, pumping blood cells which carry oxygen
What is vascular shunting
When your muscles need more blood for movement and so move away from the organs to the muscles. Transporting blood from organs->muscles
How is the cardiovascular system formed
The cardiovascular system is formed by ur heart and blood vessels. Cardio means heart and vascular means blood vessels
Three main functions of the cardiovascular system
Clot the blood, tranpsort nutrients, carries out carbon dioxide
What dows controlling the body temp
Vasodilation (blood is diverted to the surface to allow more heat to radiate out.
What are arteries
Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart. They have thick walls as they have higher perssure than veins as the blood is oxygenated
What do the veins do
Carry deoxygenated blood into the heart. They have thinner walls and carry blood at alot lower pressure
Capillaries
Transport blood which tranfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. At the other end they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products and taking them around the body to dispose of them
Systolic phase
Where blood is pumped from both atria into the ventricles
Dystolic phase
Where the heart is relaxing and refilling the atria with blood
What is blood pressure
Blood pressure is a measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body
Why are red blood cells important
Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells, and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs
Importance of white blood cells
Transparent cells carry antibodies to fight againt infection and disease.
Importance of plasma
The main role of plasma is to take nutrients, hormons, amd proteins to the parts of the body that needs it
