Q

Vasodilation

A

when veins swellup or dilate; widening of theinternal diameter (lumen) of theblood vessel toallowincreasedblood flow.

A

when veins shrink down; narrowing of theinternal diameter (lumen) of theblood vessel to decrease bloodflow

Q

What are 3 functions of the cardiovasular system

A

Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
It helps clot blood
It controls the body temperature

Q

What is vascular shunting

A

Your muscles need more blood for movement and so move away from the organs to the muscles. The process is called vascular shunting. Your heart starts to beat fastee and your blood vessels constrict into order to divert the bloodnto the muscles. Your reflexes get faster and your muscles may tense up

Q

Arteries.

A

Take blood away from heart
Have thick walls and are more elastic than veins as they carry blood which is at a hogher level
The channel it flows through widens to allow more through so it can reach the working muscles

Q

Veins

A

Carry blood into heart
Much thinner walls carry blood at a lower level
Helps depxygenate blood throw to the heart

Q

Capillaries

A

Just one cell thick
At one end they carry oxegenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
At the other end they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins picking up waste products

Q

Vascular shunting

A

process that increases blood flow to activeareas during exercise by divertingblood away from inactive areas;achieved by vasodilation andvasoconstriction.

A

White blood cells

18
Q

Pathogen

A

an agent that causes disease, such as a virus.

19
Q

Antibody

A

chemical that destroys a pathogen.

20
Q

White blood cell use

A

Fight bacteria and infection

21
Q

Red blood cell use

A

Spread ocygen around the body

22
Q

Plasma use

A

Take nutrients, hormones and protiens to the part of the body that need it
