Soc 15 Flashcards
What are the 3 main functions of the cardio vascular system
To pump blood towards the cells
To transport oxygen from lungs
Carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood round the body
What is vascular shunting ?
Vascular shunting is the direction blood flows around the body
What are the characteristics of : Arteris, Veins, Capillares
Arteries take blood away from the heart
Veins carry blood to the heart
Capillares carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
What makes up the cardiovascular system
Is formed by our heart and blood vessels. Cardio means the heart and vascular means blood vessels
What are the 3 main functions of the cardiovascular fitness
. Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
. Heart pumps oxygen around the body
. Controlls our body temp
.
What is vascular shanting
Process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas! Achieved by vasodilation and vasconstriction.
What is cardio respiratory system
The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
What are Arteries
.Arteries take oxygenated blood away from the heart
.Arteries have thick walls and are more elastic than veins
What are veins
Carry blood into the heart
Veins have much thinner walls and carry deoxygenated blood at a lower pressure
What are Capillaries
.Cappileries are microscopic vessels- just one cell thick
.Carries oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles
.Carries deoxygenated blood into the veins picking up
Structure of the heart
What is the systolic phase
.Where blood is pumped from both atria into the ventricles
.pushing deoxygenated blood to leave the right ventricle to the lungs via thenpulmonary artery
What is the diastolic phase
Thisnis when the heart is relaxing and refilling with the atria with blood
Blood pressure
Blood pressure is a measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body.
Why are red blood cells important
Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s cells and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs. They contain haemoglonpbin which stores oxygen and carbon dioxide.
