Soc 13: Joints, movements, ligaments and tendons Flashcards
4 types of joints
. Pivot (neck)
. Hinge (knee, elbow, ankle)
. Ball and socket (shoulder, hip)
. Condyloid (wrist)
Name the 8 movements
. Extension
. Adduction
. Abduction
. Rotation
. Circumduction
. Dorsi - flexion
. Plantar - flexion
Movement possible at pivot (neck)
Allow bones to rotate
Movement possible at hinge (knee, elbow, ankle)
Allows only backward and forward motion
Movement possible at ball and socket (shoulder, hip)
Allows a variety and bigger range of movement
Movement possible at condyloid (wrist)
Allows circular motion
What does ligaments do
Connects to a bone
What do tendons do
Connect bone to muscle
Extension definition
Straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts
Adduction defintion
Movement that pulls towards the midline of the body
Abduction definition
Movement that pulls away from the midline of the body
Rotation definition
Movement around a single axis or pivot point
Circumduction definiton
Moving in a circular or conical shape
Dorsi flexion definition
Bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin
Plantar flexion definition
Extending or pointing the toes down, away from the shin
