Four reasons people take PED’s
- Improve their performance
- Some people are encouraged to do so by their coaches or fellow athletes
- The reward of winning (Gold medal in some sports is said to be worth a million dollars in endorsements).
- Pressure
Anabolic steroids
Mimic testosterone to promote bone growth and muscle growth. Increases bone growth and muscle mass.
There is a risk of heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and death
Beta blockers
Beta blockers calm you down and reduce heart rate. Target sports with high pressure and need for steadiness.
Side effects consist of: nightmares, fatigue and somwtimes depression
Narcotics
These drugs allow you to train whilst your injured. However, it can make the injury worse
Diuretics
Drugs that elevate the urine production. Allow athletes to loss weight rapidly. Would he ideal for a boxer trying to reduce weight for a weigh in
Bad hydration is a side effect
Peptide hormones
Inreased rate of maturation of red blood cells. Allows the body to carry more oxygen.
Blood becomes thicker which van therefore lead to a heart attack
Growth hormones
Help with the build up of muscle but not as aggressive as steroids and not many side effects. One side effects can be headaches
Stimulants
They effect the central nervous system (CNS). Increase physical alertness. An example of one of these is cocaine.
Side effects are that after them you will be on a down afterwoods.
Blood doping
When you remove blood from your system then your body reacts to it by restoring the red blood cells that you took out. You then insert the blood back in which creates lots of red blood cells.
