Smoking effcets Flashcards
what are the six effects of smoking
Bronchitis
cancer
Cilia
Effect of tar
Carbon monoxide
Emphysema
what is the effect of Tar
taris a caricogen (therefore increases the risk of cancer )
Irritates the lining of the air passage
what is the effect of Carbon monoxide
can’t form haemoglobin
oxygen can’t be carried from lungs to tissue
reaction is irreversible
what is the effect of Emphysema
walls of alveoli become weak
breathing becomes painful and hard
Coughing burst alveoli
what is the effect of Bronchitis
Excess mucus collecting in the bronchi results in destruction of the cilia
what is the effect of Cancer
smoking deposits tar in the lungs. Tar is a carcinogen which increases the risk of cancer
what is tar
a carcinogen
what is the effect of smoking on the cilia
Cilia’s normal job is to sweeps out mucus (so it can remove the mucus with trapped pathogens in)
Tar coats the cilia paralysing its job which increases the risk of infection.
what is coronary heart disease
this is when the coronary arteries that supply blood to the muscles of the heart become blocked by layers of fatty material building up
This causes arteries to become narrow so blood flow is restricted and there is a lack of oxygen to the heart muscles—–> this can cause a heart attack
what are causes of cornary heart disease
high saturated fat diets
smoking
being inactive— high blood pressure (damaging the arteries)
