Environment Flashcards
what is the effect of sulphur dioxide
Sulphur dissolves into rain water forms acid rain
- acid rain erodes metals
- kills plants
- kills aquatic life forms
- destroys habitats
What is the effect of carbon monoxide
Binds irreversible to haemoglobin
which stops oxygen going to the heart
list greenhouse gases
Water vapour
carbon dioxide
nitrous oxide
methane
CFCs
what causes carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide to be let out in the world
Fossil fuels
What causes methane to be let out in the world
Cows grazing
anaerobic conditions of cows
what causes CFCs to be let out into the world
use for solvents
aerosols (deodorant)
freezers/fridges
what are human activities which contribute to greenhouse gases
Cows grazing
deforestation
combustion - burning fossil fuels
what is the definition of greenhouse gases and the effect it has on the environment
Greenhouse gases are gases which absorb the IR radiation which prevent heat from travelling back into space. Therefore warming up our planet
- The sun radiates heat onto earth and some is usually reflected back into space.
- due to greenhouse gases this can’t happen and the heat is trapped in via greenhouses gases forming a blanket around the earth.
