Slope Flashcards
What is the equation for slope?
y2 - y1 / x2 - x1
rise/ run
What is the equation of a line?
y = mx + b
m = slope b = y intercept
and the x and the y are the coordinates of a point
What is the slop of a horizontal line?
slope of a horizontal line is zero
what is the slope of a line from left to right that is going up?
positive slope
what is the slope of a line from left to right that is going down?
slope would be negative
if a line is vertical what is the slope ?
undefined
What is true about the slope of parallel lines?
All parallel lines have the exact same slope
What is true about the slope of perpendicular lines?
perpendicular lines have a slope that is the opposite reciprocal of each other
ex.
So, if one slope is 3/2 and the line is perpendicular, then the other slope is -2/3
The equation of a line is y = 10/11x + 2
What are the legs of the triangle?
north south leg = 2
east west leg = 2.2
You know the y intercept is 2
You also know that the west most point has to be (-?, 0) so since you are looking for the ? and you know the y-value which is 0, you can plug zero into the equation of a line to get 0 = 10/11x + 2 then you can solve and you get x = 2.2
so you are comparing 2.2 with 2 so the east west side of the triangle is greater
what is the x-intercept of the line y = 2x + 3
(-3/2, 0)
What is important to remember about perpendicular lines and their slopes??
Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals of each other
