When you see the words “average (arithmetic mean)” What should you do?
Draw an average pie!
What is an average pie?
/ Total / # of things x Average
The average of p and q is 120. The average of q and r is 160. How much greater is r than p?
Answer = 80
draw two average pies:
240
2 x 120
and
320
2 x 160
Average salary for executives with college degree only = $82,000
Average salary for executives with masters degree = $97,000
Company X only employs executives who belong to one of the two categories above. The average annual salary for all executives at Company X is $87,000
QA: The number of executives at Company X college degree only
QB: The number of executives at Company X with masters degree
Because the average annual salary for all executives is the average of two types of executives at Company X, compare the values. The average salary for executives with college degrees only is $82,000. For executives with masters = $97,000
Because the average annual salary for all executives is $87,000, the number of executives with colleges degrees must be greater than the number of executives with masters degrees because $87,000 is closer to $82,000 than it is to $97,000
therefore, answer = QA is greater
if there are 30 employees, which numbers in the list do you use to get the median?
the 15th and 16th, take the 15th + 16th and divide by 2 to get the median
