Sleep and mental well-being are closely linked
Mental health problems can cause sleep problems and visa versa
What are the two stages of sleep?
R.E.M.
NREM
What occurs in R.E.M. sleep?
Dreams happen at this stage and skeletal muscles are paralysed
What happens in NREM?
Most of our sleep happens in this stage and it is characterised by the reduction of physiological activity
Sleep gets deeper and brain waves get slower as well as breathing and heart rate
What is circadian rhythm?
When we feel the greatest urge to sleep and when we need to sleep naturally - our body clock
Can be influenced by other factors
