Renal Physiology Flashcards
What are the structures of the urinary system?
Kidneys
Ureters
Bladder
Urethra
What is the function of the kidneys?
Remove urea and expel urine
Filter blood and regulate blood volume
What is the main function of the bladder?
To temporarily store urine
What is the main functions of the ureters?
To carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
What is the main function of the urethra?
To transport urine from the bladder out of the body
What are nephrons for?
Responsible for the purification and filtration of blood
What does the renal corpuscle do?
Filtration
What does the renal tubule do?
Converts filtrate to urine
Where is the renal corpuscle ?
Enclosed in the bowmans capsule
What happens in the renal corpuscle?
Afferent arteriole that bring blood at high pressures
As blood is pushed through capillaries - This is how plasma filtration happens
What does filtrate contain?
Water, electrolytes, urea, amino acids and glucose
What are the three main sections of the renal tubule?
Proximal convoluted tube
Loop of henle
Distal convoluted tubs
What happens in the proximal convoluted tube?
Reabsorption begins here
Glucose, amino acids and some electrolytes reabsorbed from filtrate
What happens in the loop of henle?
Filtrate passes through
Sodium and water is reabsorbed and concentrates filtrate
What happens in the distal convoluted tube?
Receive plasma filtrate from loop of henle
Waste and toxins transported from filtrate and flows into collecting ducts
