Organisation In The Human Body Flashcards
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life and what the body is made of
What is a tissue?
A collection of similar cells are grouped together to perform specialised tasks and functions
What is an organ?
A group of tissue structured together to perform a specific function
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that carry out particular tasks
What are the types of tissue?
Connective tissue
Epithelial tissue
Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
What is epithelial tissue?
Simplest tissue type shows how individuals cells can be built up into tissues of different complexity
What is simple epithelial tissue?
Just one layer
What is stratified epithelial tissue?
Many layers
What are the main functions of epithelial tissues?
Protection
Secretion
Absorption
What are the forms connective tissue come in?
Liquid
Solid
Gel
What is collagen?
Rope like, providing strength and flexibility
What is elastin?
Elastic like, allowing for distortion and restoration to original shape
What are the major cells found in connective tissue?
Fibroblasts
Mast cells
Macrophages
What is nervous tissue?
It is made of nerve cells and supporting cells that reacts to stimuli and conducts impulse to organs and bring about a response
What is muscle tissue?
It’s made up of skeletal muscle, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle and controls both voluntary and involuntary movements
