Cells, Tissues And Organs Of The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system do?
It carries oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body
Also picks up and gets rid of carbon dioxide and other waste products
Also plays a part in protecting the body from infections and blood loss
Maintain body temperature and fluid balance
What are the the three main components of the cardiovascular system?
Heart
Blood vessels
Blood
What are the components of the heart wall?
Pericardium/epicardium
Endocardium
Myocardium
What is the pericardium/epicardium?
The outer and protective layer,
It’s a membrane that is made up of connective tissue and covered by epithelium
It’s a fluid filled sack that surrounds the heart and the proximal ends of major vessels
What is the need for fluid in the pericardium?
It stops friction and allows the heart to continue to move smoothly
What is the endocardium?
It is the most important part of the heart wall
Composed of endothelium- a thin layer which line the interior of the heart and blood vessels and determine the health of the blood vessels
What is the myocardium?
It is made largely of cardiac muscle tissue that is responsible for forcing blood out the heart chambers
Heart muscle is a single function organ that makes it different from other muscles
