Q

How does the heart actually work?

A

It contracts in a coordinated fashion to ensure blood pumps around the body efficiently and this is achieved by the cardiac conduction system

Q

How does the cardiac conduction system work?

A

From the sino-atrial (SA) node impulses spread over the atrial muscle causing atrial contractions - electrical impulses are then conducted to the AV node - from the AV node they are spread to the ventricular muscle

12
Q

Why is there an extra 0.2 seconds left after systole and diastole?

A

To allow for the atria to completely contract and fill again

15
Q

What is atrial systole?

A

Contractions of the left and right atria that allow the 30% of blood which does not passive flow into the ventricles to pass through

16
Q

What is ventricular systole?

A

When the left and right ventricles contract pushing blood into the aorta and pulmonary artery

17
Q

What is diastole?

A

The period of time where the atria and ventricles are relaxed allowing the myocardium to recover
At this time blood is passively flowing from LA and RA to LV and RV

18
Q

What is sinus rhythm?

A

It is the normal rhythm of the heart

following the normal P QRS T rhythm
