Automomic Nervous System Flashcards
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for?
Automatic functions
It is important in homeostasis as it controls a majority of the internal environment
What nervous system is the autonomic nervous system part of?
The PNS
What are the two systems the autonomic nervous system divided into?
The parasympathetic nervous system
The sympathetic nervous system
What nervous system would voluntary movements be controlled by?
Somatic nervous system
What is the sympathetic nervous system responsible for?
Fast, sudden actions such as flight to fight
What is the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for?
Slower and more peaceful activities that are associated with rest
In relation to the cardiac muscle what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Activity is inhibited
In relation to the cardiac muscle what does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Increases activity
If a patient was feeling panicky and hypertensive what drugs would need to be prescribed to reduce this
One that block the action of the sympathetic nervous system
Or
One that increases and stimulates the actions of the parasympathetic nervous system
