Fluid Balance Flashcards
What are the two main fluids of the body?
Extracellular fluid which baths cells acting as a medium for constant exchange of nutrients and water products between capillaries and cells
Intracellular fluid which is 60% of all
Body fluids - found within cells
What is ECF made up of ?
Interstitial fluid- found outside cells
Intravascular fluid- blood plasma
What is the risk of overhydration?
Too much water in the body may lead to nausea, anorexia, vomiting, confusion, cardiac failure
What damage can under hydration cause?
Thirst, dry skin, low BP, coma
How is blood volume determined?
Blood volume is determined by the amount of water and sodium ingested
How does RAAS work?
When blood volume is low specialised cells in the kidney secrets renin
Renin causes angiotensin which is produced by the liver to convert to angiotensin 1
Angiotensin 1 travels in the circulation to the lungs where it is converted to angiotensin 2
Angiotensin 2 causes vasoconstriction to increase peripheral resistance
Stimulates secretion of aldosterone
Aldosterone acts on kidneys to decrease production of urine
