Hormones Flashcards
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers that control how we respond to changes in the environment around us
What are the key roles of hormones?
Growth, sexual function, metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance, sleep, mood
What is the role of the endocrine glands?
A collection of secretory cells which release hormone secretions into blood stream
What are the role of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland?
Responsible for the control of hormones and the level of them in the body
What are the role of target cells?
They are receptors that allow hormones to interact with cells
What are the main hormone types?
Steroid
Protein
How is the activity of the endocrine glands, tissues and cells controlled?
Chemical
Neural
Hormonal
What does the pituitary gland do?
Secretes hormones
What does the anterior pituitary gland do?
Synthesises and releases hormones
How to steroids transport in the blood?
Through a binding protein as they cannot freely transport in the blood due to being lipid soluble
How to proteins transport through the blood?
Freely transported in the blood due to being water soluble
