Skull Anatomy Flashcards
Frontal Bone
Bone covering the frontal lobe of the brain. Runs on anterior portion of skull and is bordered by the sphenoid bilaterally and also by the coronal suture posteriorly.
Frontal Sinus
Sinus located beneath the frontal bone. Located bilaterally inferior to the supraorbital ridge of the frontal bone
parietal bones
Bones located bilaterally on the lateral portion of the skill. Bones are bordered by the coronal suture anteriorly, the squamosal suture laterally, and the lambdoidal sutures posteriorly
Occipital bone
Bone located on posterior portion of the skill. Bordered by the lamboid suture on the superior edge and by the occipitomastoid suture on the later aspects.
Foramen magnum
Largest opening on the inferior surface of the skull. Located within the occipital bone.
Occipital Condyles
Two protuberances located near the foramen magnum. The condyles are bilateral and located anterior to the foramen magnum with a space between them.
External occipital protuberance
A protuberance located on the most posterior aspect of the occipital bone. It is located on the midline of the body.
Hypoglossal canal
located near the occipital condyles bilaterally near the foramen magnum. These canals allow passage of the hypoglossal nerve.
