Humerus Osteology Flashcards
Head
Large rounded protrusion on the distal aspect of the humerus. Articulates directly with the shoulder joint.
Deltoid Tuberosity
Located on the lateral portion of the humerus half way down the shaft of the humerus. Insertion of the deltoid occurs here.
Intertubercular Groove
Groove located between the greater and lesser tubercle on the proximal portion of the humerus.
Trochlea
Aspect on the distal portion of the humerus that directly articulates with the ulna on the medial side.
Olecranon Fossa
Large depression on the posterior surface of the humerus that articulates with the olecranon process of the ulna during full extension.
Anatomical Neck
The ridge between the head of the humerus and the greater and lesser tubercle on the proximal portion of the humerus.
Greater Tubercle
The larger and more lateral prominence on the lateral side of the proximal humerus.
Medial Epicondyle
The protrusion on the medial side of the distal humerus.
Capitulum
Lateral aspect of the most distal portion of the humerus that articulates with the radius.
Lateral supracondylar ridge
Ridge located on the lateral portion of the humerus, just superior to the lateral condyle.
Surgical Neck
Aspect of the humerus directly distal to the greater and lesser tubercles. It encircles the full circumference of the humerus and is proximal to the nutrient foramen.
Lesser Tubercle
The smaller and more medial projection on the proximal portion of the humerus. Located on the anterior portion of the humerus.
Lateral Epicondyle
Protrusion on the lateral distal side of the humerus.
Coronoid Fossa
Depression located on the distal portion of the humerus. Located more medially to the radial fossa. Articulates with the ulna.
Radial Fossa
Depression located on the distal portion of the humerus. Located more laterally to the coronoid fossa. Articulates with the radius.
