Forearm and Hand Flashcards
Flexor carpi radialis
Originates on medial epicondyle of humerus. Inserts on radial carpals. Flexes wrist, radially deviates.
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Originates on medial epicondyle of humerus. Inserts on pisiform and hook of hamate. Flexes wrist, ulnar deviation
Pronator teres
Originates on medial epicondyle. Inserts on lateral radius. Pronates.
Flexor digitorum superficialis
Originates on the medial epicondyle and coronoid process. Inserts on middle phalanges of metacarpals 2-5.
Palmaris longus
Originates on medial epicondyle. Inserts on palmar aponeurosis. Flexes wrist.
Thenar muscles
Thumb side.
Opponens pollicis, abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis
Opponens pollicis
Originates on trapezium. Inserts on 1st metacarpal. Opposes thumb (rotates 1st metacarpal over)
Abductor pollicis
Originates on scaphoid and trapezium. Inserts on proximal phalanx of thumb. Abducts thumb (Raises ventrally)
flexor pollicis brevis
Originates on capitate and trapezium. Inserts on proximal phalanx of thumb. Flexes thumb (Raises laterally)
Hypothenar Muscles
Pinky Side
Opponens digiti minimi, Abductor digiti minimi, Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Opponens digiti minimi
Originates on hook of hamate, inserts on 5th metacarpal. Draws metacarpal in palmar direction (Opposition).
Abductor digiti minimi
Originates on pisiform bone. Inserts on 5th proximal phalanx. Abducts and flexes MCP joint of middle finger.
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Originates on hook of hamate, flexor retinaculum. Inserts on 5th proximal phalanx. Flexes MCP joint of little finger.
Radial a.
Artery that runs on lateral side of arm. Branch of brachial artery.
Ulnar a.
Artery that runs down the medial side of arm. Branch of brachial artery.
Superficial palmar arch
Anastamosis of radial and ulnar artery located on the palm
Common digital arteries
Arteries that run between metacarpals to vascularize the fingers
Radial n.
Nerve that runs along the lateral side of the arm. Branch of posterior cord. Innervates posterior side of thumb
Ulnar n.
Nerve that runs along the medial side of the arm. Branch of the medial cord. Innervates anterior side of the lateral half of the 4th finger and the 5th finger.
Recurrent Median (thenar) n.
Nerve that innervates the thenar muscles
Flexor retinaculum
Transverse carpal ligament that borders the carpal tunnel.
Anatomical snuff box (Borders and structures within)
Borders: Extensor pollicis longus dorsally, Extensor pollicis brevis ventrally
Structures within: Dorsal Radial Artery and Superficial radial nerve
Pulse Point!
Palmar carpal ligament
Ligament just proximal to the flexor retinaculum. Ulnar nerve and artery run though this but NOT flexor retinaculum.
Metacarpal phalangeal joint
(MCP) joint between metacarpal and proximal phalanx.
