Heart Anatomy Flashcards
R. Ventricle
The thinner walled ventricle on the inferior portion of the heart. Located inferior to the superior vena cava and right atrium.
R. Atrium
The chamber directly attached to the superior and inferior vena cava
L. Ventricle
The thicker walled ventricle that pumps blood out the aorta.
L. Atrium
The chamber that receives blood from the pulmonary veins and pumps blood into the left ventricle
Pulmonary Valve
The valve that prevents back flow from the the pulmonary arteries back into the right ventricle
Aortic Valve
The valve that prevents back flow from the aorta into the left ventricle. It’s a semilunar valve.
Tricuspid Valve
Prevents back flow from the Right ventricle to the Right atrium.
R. Atrioventricular Valve
Prevents back flow from the right ventricle to the right atrium.
Bicuspid Valve
Prevents back flow from the left ventricle to the left atrium.
Mitral Valve
Prevents back flow from the left ventricle to the left atrium.
L. Atrioventricular Valve
Prevents back flow from the left ventricle to the left atrium.
Papillary Muscles
Pull on the chordeae tendinae to open/shut the atrioventricular valves
Chordae Tendineae
The chords connecting the AV valves to the papillary muscles
Pulmonary Trunk
The junction of the pulmonary arteries leaving the right ventricle
Pulmonary Arteries
The arteries that carry blood to the lungs from the right ventricle. Flow superior to the left atrium and inferior to the aortic arch.
Aorta
The thickest artery in the body. Carries blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body
Brachiocephalic Branch
The first branch off of the aorta. Carries blood to the right caudal region.
Carotid Branch
The second branch off of the aorta. Carries blood to the left side of the brain and face.
Subclavian Branch
The third branch off of the aotra. Carries blood to the left axillary/brachial region.
Superior Vena Cava
The large vein that collects blood from the superior aspect of the human body and dumps it into the right atrium.
Inferior Vena Cava
The large vein that collects blood from the inferior aspect of the human body and dumps it into the right atrium.
R. and L. Pulmonary Veins
Vessels that carry blood back from the lungs to the heart after the lungs oxygenated the blood. Dumps into the right atrium.
R. Auricle
Fatty deposit of tissue on the right atrium
L. Auricle
Fatty deposit of tissue on the left atrium
Ligamentum Arteriosum
Ligament connecting the pulmonary arteries to the aortic arch
Anterior Interventricular Sulcus
Depression between the right and left ventricle on the anterior side of the heart
Posterior Interventricular Sulcus
Depression between the right and left ventricle on the posterior side of the heart
Fossa Ovalis
A depression on the interior and medial side of the right atrium. Closed after birth but scarring remains.
R. and L. Coronary Arteries
Runs from between the left and right atria around the heart. Left goes between left atrium and ventricle, right goes between right atrium and ventricle.
R. Marginal Artery
Branch of RCA that runs on the right lateral side of the heart down the length of the right ventricle. Runs in the frontal plane.
Posterior Interventricular Artery
Branch of the RCA that extends into the posterior sulcus between the ventricles
L. Circumflex Artery
Branch of the LCA that wraps around the left atrium in the groove between the left atrium and ventricle.
Anterior Interventricular Artery
Artery that is a branch of the LCA which runs in the groove between the right and left ventricle on the anterior side of the heart
Coronary Sinus
Thick collecting duct on the posterior side of the heart between the left and right atrium. Flows into the right atrium.
Great Cardiac Vein
Follows the circumflex branch of the LCA. Wraps around the left atrium in a clockwise fashion.
Middle Cardiac Vein
Medium sized vein that runs between the left and right ventricle on the posterior side of the heart
Small Cardiac Vein
Vein that runs counterclockwise around the border of the right atrium and ventricle from the coronary sinus.
