skinner-radical behaviorism Flashcards
focused on
stimulus-response association-what is effect of environment on behavior
No…
inner mediators. All behavior is controlled by environment contingencies of reinforcement look at behavior
skinner theory hard to disprove
if a behavior appears uncontrolled by environment then always can be argued that you simply have not identified the reinforcement that controls that behavior
Ideas(covert behaviors)
are behaviors and as such are under environmental control
Inner causes
simply do not exist, have not analyzed environmental contingencies enough if you believe that thoughts and feelings and such control our behaviors
thoughts
talking to oneself, covert behavior and therefore under control of environmental contingencies
emotions
covert behaviors complex, emitted in response to environmental contingencies of reinforcement
Responsibility
no personal responsibility for our behaviors bc behavior is function of environment in which we live, change the environment=change the behavior
blame/credit
no need for either if no personal responsibility no one is inherently good or bad
knowledge of other people
all behavior can be predicted-gives us the perception that we know another person, not based on empathy and understanding
agency/purpose
fictional inner causes of behavior
choice/will
not real constructs, arise when have conflicting schedules of reinforcement, weight according to own personal history of reinforcement, give illusion of choice-always controlled
faith
not aware of what controls our behavior attribute those behaviors to faith, is reflection of ignorance
personality
no such thing, systematic coherent schedules of reinforcement produce systematic coherent behavior-come from consistency in environment
