Self determination theory(SDT) Flashcards
Active vs. passive nature
humans are by nature active organisms, seek out opportunities for choice, mastery and interpersonal connection. Also work to integrate ongoing experiences to be more coherent consistent and unified self. Although active and proactive humans are vulnerable to experiences of passivity and control . tend to rely on external influences for energization and direction of our behavior when conditions in the environment are not supportive of our inherent growth tendencies.
Sources of energy
physiological drives, psychological needs and emotions. Can be complementary and can also be antagonistic.
Direction of behavior
behavior is regulated either with experience of choice and volition or with pressure and control. Can be reflective self endorsed . Or feel pressured and controlled by sources outside of our volition, feel that others or ourselves are making us feel a certain way.
Tendency toward unity vs. fragmentation
end towards psychological coherence and adaptation to the social and physician environment. Naturally more towards unity but also vulnerable to fragmentation and alienation
What is SDT?
