applied behavioral analysis Flashcards
Therapy from a behavioral perspective goal
increase adaptive behavior is the goal
must first
Identify “target” behaviors-individual wants to increase or decrease
4 stages
acquisition, extinction, discrimination, generalization
Acquisition
acquires positive adaptive behaviors
extinction
extinguishes negative maladaptive behaviors
discrimination
distinguish between positve and negavtive behaviors
generalization
applies positive behaviors learned in therapy to other domains
Applied behavior analysis can occur in two ways
increase response likely hood, and decrease response likely hood
increase response likelihood through
change environment to maintain and increase adaptive behaviors-through positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement
positive reinforcement
gives patient something as reward for desired behavior-must use strong enough reinforcement
negative reinforcement
removes aversive consequence for desired behavior
decrease response likelihood through
removal of reinforcement for negative behaviors can be done through….extinction, response cost, punishment, differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviors
extinction
identifies what controls the behavior and then remove that reinforcement, primary means of decreasing negative behavior
extinction
response cost
patient loses a reward/positive reinforcement as function of their negative behavior
punishment
ineffective is easily forgotten, only used if undesired behavior is more harmful than punishment itself
