Cognitive mediation of behavior
giving rise to behavioral response there is first an enviromental stim but the stim doesn’t directly illicit a response rather the stim illicits cognitive expectancy which elicits the response….behavior is dependent on cognition
leading to behavior
Stimulus→Cognitive expectancy→ Response
Behavior potential (motivation) =
Expectancy(outcome of our behavior is at best probabilistic never know if our behavior is going to be reinforced, behavioral conditioning requires the person to be aware of the reinforcement) x Pence(psychological value of the reinforcement, how important is the reward to you)
Internal LOC
belief that your behavior can lead to desired outcome, behavior and reinforcement are contingently linked, perceives self as in control of own destiny, likely to be motivated
External LOC
belief that ones behavior cannot lead to desired outcomes, no contingent link between behavior and reinforcement, perceive outside forces as controlling destiny, function of fate and chance and luck, not very motivated
locus of control instead of
reinforcement
Internal/external LOC scale
using scale to assess outcomes associated with both locus
Internal
believe that their actions have direct consequences, are happier, more independent, enjoy better health
external
believe do not have control, feel more depressed and anxious
