Skin Flashcards
What are the three layers of the skin?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis
What type of tissue is the epidermis made of?
Epithelial tissue
What type of tissue is the dermis?
Connective
What type of tissue is the hypodermis?
Fat
What are the five layers of the epidermis in order of axial to basal?
- Stratum corneum
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum
- Stratum spinosum
- Stratum basale
Name of the cells that make up the outer most layer of skin
Keratinocytes
What is the spider shaped cell that produces melanin for skin colour?
Melanocytes
What are the immune cells that exist in the skin called?
Langerhans (they are dendritic cells)
What is the function of merkel cells at the stratum basale?
They combine with nerve endings to create a sensory receptor
Where do you find thick skin and how many epidermal layers are there?
Hands and feet, 5
Thin skin and how many layers?
Abs and 4
What happens to keratohyalin in the corneum, lucid and granulosum?
It is converted into keratin
Why are the cells in the spinosum spiny?
They have desmosomes in between cells, and when the cells shrink these stay together causing spiny projections
How are cells in the basale bound to the basal lamina?
Hemidesmosomes
What are the two levels of the dermis called?
- Papillary layer
- Reticular layer
