Reflexes Flashcards
How do you test the stretch reflex?
Tapping the tendons
What does tapping the tendons activate?
Alpha motor neurons
Which muscle contracts, antagonist or agonist?
Agonist
What is the stretch reflex the only known example of?
Monosynaptic reflex
During the stretch reflex, what must the antagonist muscle do?
- Since they work in pairs
- Must relax
Why do the antagonists relax?
Spindle afferents activate inhibitory interneurones which then decrease alpha motor neurone transmission to the target
What reflex is mediated by golgi tendon organs?
Clasp-knife reflex
Describe clasp knife
- Muscle contracts
- Pulls on GTO
- Stretch sensitive ion channels open increasing neurone charge
- Activates inhibitory interneurons that decrease muscle contractile strength
- Excitatory interneurons to the antagonist muscle are also activated
What is the function of the clasp knife reflex?
- Protective
- Prevents the tendon being torn
What receptors does the flexor withdrawal reflex use in the skin, muscle and joints?
Nociceptors
