Immunology 2 Flashcards
What are the 3 functions of the lymph system?
- Drain tissue fluid
- Absorption and transport of FA
- Immunity
Why does lymph only travel one way?
The lymphatic vessels have valves
What are the two main ducts of the lymphatic system?
- Thoracic duct
- Right duct
Where does the lymph that drains into the thoracic duct come from?
The left upper and lower, and the right lower quarters of the body
Where does the lymph that drains into the right duct come from?
The upper right quarter
What is the function of the 2 primary lymphoid organs?
Haematopoiesis of wbc
What are the 2 primary lymphoid organs?
- Thymus (T cell education)
- Bone marrow
What is the function if the secondary lymphoid organs?
Lymphocyte activation
What is the primary function of the spleen?
Blood filtration
What is contained in the red and white pulp of the spleen respectively?
- RBC’s
- WBC’s
“Lymphocytes like to go on pub crawls” what does this mean?
- They travel from lymph node to lymph node
What are peyers patches?
Areas in your gut that sample the stuff in the gut
What do peyers patches hope to catch?
Antigens
Where do peyers patches transport the antigens?
The lymph system, it then interacts with lymph nodes
What do dendritic cells do when they come into contact with an antigen?
- Phagocytose it
- Present it on their surface as MHC2
What do T lymphocytes have on their surface that can interact with MHC?
T cell receptors
What T cells are formed when viral protein is found on MHC 1?
CD8 (cytotoxic)
What T cells are formed when viral protein is found on MHC 2?
CD4
What is positive selection with regards to T cells?
They’re shown a range of antigens on cells and if they recognise none they will be killed
What is negative selection with regards to T cells
They’re shown our proteins and if they bind they are killed
