Bone Flashcards
4 functions of bones?
- Support
- Protection
- Metabolism stores
- Hematopoiesis
What is endochronal ossification?
- Bone first forms as hyaline cartilage
- Blood vessels and osteogenic cells invade the cartilage
- Cartilage is slowly converted to bone, but remains at the epiphyseal plates.
Where does endochronal ossification occur?
Any bones that aren’t in the head or clavicle.
What is intermembranous ossification?
- The bone first forms as a fibrous plate
- Bone cells then differentiate from fibroblasts
- No cartilaginous phase
What are the three main factors of the composition of bone?
- Water
- Protein
- Minerals
What % of bone is water?
20%
What % of bone is protein, and what type of protein?
- 35%
- Type 1 collagen
What is the mineral that provides bone with rigidity?
Hydroxyapatite
What is the epiphysis of a bone?
The ends
What is the diaphysis of a bone?
The shaft
What are the epiphyses made of?
Trabecular (spongey) bone
What are the diaphyses made of?
Cortical bone
How is cortical bone arranged?
In haversian systems
What are osteoclasts?
They break down and reabsorb bone.
Where do osteoclasts originate (lineage)?
Hematopoietic lineage
