Enzymes Flashcards
Whats a cofactor?
A non protein part needed for functionality
Whats a coenzyme?
An enzyme made from a vitamin
What’s a prosthetic group?
A cofactor that is covalently bound to the enzyme.
What’s an apoenzyme?
The protein component of an enzyme containing the prosthetic group
How do enzymes catalyse reactions?
- Lower activation energy
- Increase rate of spontaneous reactions
- Accelerate movement towards equilibrium.
What does Km tell you?
The affinity for the enzyme of the substrate
How do competitive inhibitors work and what is their affect on Km and Vmax?
- Tend to resemble the substrate
- Bind to active site
- Km increases
- Vmax remains the same
How do non-competitive inhibitors work and what is their affect on Km and Vmax?
- They bind to a non active site on the enzyme.
- The substrate can still bind to the active site so Km remains the same
- Vmax decreases.
What is the random model when referring to enzyme-substrate binding?
- It doesn’t matter which way the substrates bind the outcome will be the same
What is the ordered sequential model?
One substrate HAS to bind before the other and the other has to leave first
