Proteins Flashcards
What are the 4 basic categories of amino acids?
- Acidic
- Basic
- Uncharged Polar
- Non Polar
Give an example of an acidic protein
Aspartic acid
Give an example of a basic
Lysine
Give an example of an uncharged polar
Glutamine
Give an example of a non polar
Phenylalanine
What is the primary structure of a protein?
The order of amino acids in the polypeptide chain.
What does primary structure allow?
Versatility in structure and function
What is the secondary structure?
The spatial arrangement of amino acids that are near each other
What are the two structures of secondary structures?
- Alpha helices
- Beta sheets
How are alpha helices stabilised?
Hydrogen bonds between the N-H group on one amino acid and the C=O group on another.
How are beta sheets stabilised?
- Hydrogen bonds between amide groups polypeptide chains running parallel or antiparallel to each other
What is tertiary structure?
Interactions in a polypeptide chain between residues far away from each other.
