Skin Flashcards
1
Q
Wound categories
A
1 intentional vs unintentional
2 open or closed
3 acute or chronic
4 partial thickness, full thickness, complex
2
Q
Chronic wound
A
over 6 months, probably on medication
3
Q
Causes of skin alteration
A
- v thin
- obesity (loose flabby skin, moisture pockets, fluid loss cause dehydration)
4
Q
Contusion
A
- skin is intact/not broken
- vessels/capillaries are damaged
- black + blue
5
Q
Laceration
A
skin opening
6
Q
Avulsion
A
tissue loss, cannot sew back together
7
Q
PRINCIPLES OF WOUND HEALING
A
- intact skin is 1st line of defense
- careful hand hygiene
- adequate blood supply is essential
- normal healing is promoted when wound is free of foreign materials
- body responds systemically to trauma
8
Q
4 Phases of Wound Healing
A
1 Hemostasis
2 Inflammatory
3
4 Maturation
9
Q
4 Phases of Wound Healing
A
1 Hemostasis
2 Inflammatory
3 Proliferation
4 Maturation
10
Q
Hemostasis
A
- occurs immediately after injury
- blood vessels CONSTRICT + clotting begins
- exudate is formed>cause pain + swelling
- INCR perfusion> heat + redness
- platelets stim other cells to migrate
11
Q
Inflammatory
A
- 2-3 days
- WBC (leuk + macrophage) move to wound
- ingest debris
12
Q
Proliferation Phase
A
- last several weeks
- new tissue is built to fill wound w fibroblast
- capillaries grow across wound
- thin later of epithelial cells gros
13
Q
Maturation Phase
A
- final stage, 3 weeks after injury
- collagen is remodeled
- new collagen deposited
- scar becomes flat thin white
