11
Q

Osteogenic cells

A

*Bone stem cells
create new osteoblasts.
These cells are found in the inner layer of the periosteum.

Q

A

*Bone builders

make and secrete collagen fibers to create the framework for all bone tissue to grow.

A

*Mature bone cells

responsible for the continual exchange of nutrients and wastes of the living bone tissue.

16
Q

Spongy bones

A

Has a lattice like apperance.

  • Can be found in the ends of long bones & throughout the flat bones
  • Reduces the weight of bones
  • Red bone marrow fills the spaces of spongy bone tissue.
17
Q

Types of bones

A
Long bones
Short bones
Flat bones
Irregular bones
Sesamoid bones
18
Q

What are the functions of the Skeletal System?

A
  1. Acts as a supportive frame for the body
  2. Protects vital organs
  3. Provides the levers (bones) and fulcrum points (joints) that allow movement when muscles contract
  4. Stores calcium and other minerals in bone tissue matrix
  5. Produces blood cells in the red bone marrow
19
Q

What is the clinical connection for massage in the skeletal system?

A
  1. Therapists can use bones and bony landmarks to asses any postural deviations in their clients.
  2. Adjust pressure and session modalities for clients with decreased bone density.
  3. Releasing muscle tension can help keep joints in alignment and therefore helps with the health of the joint.
  4. Manipulation of joint is outside of the scope of practice for bodywork therapists.
20
Q

Pathologies: Osteoporosis

A

Indicated

Cautions: Session adjustment of lighter pressure

21
Q

Pathologies: Bursitis

A

Contraindicated / Local

22
Q

Pathologies: Osteoarthritis

A

Indicated

Cautions: Contraindicated if acute inflammation is present

23
Q

Pathologies: Rheumatoid Arthritis

A

Indicated

Cautions: Gentle soothing work

24
Q

Pathologies: Gout

A

Contraindicated, if acute

25
Q

Pathologies: Sprains

A

Contraindicated locally, if acute
