Immune System 1-8 Flashcards
Function of the Immune System
Protects and defends the body from foreign substances.
Components of Immune System
Lymphocytes Thymus Lymph Nodes Spleen Mucosa
What are Lymphocytes?
B-Cells - Produced and mature in the red bone marrow
T-Cells - Produced in red bone marrow and mature in Thymus.
What are Lymph Nodes?
- Small filtering stations
- Full of phagocytes & lymphocytes
- Grow in size as they are fighting off pathogen
What does the spleen do?
- Filters out damaged or defective blood cells
- Stores lymphocytes and phagocytes
- Hold a reserve full pint of blood for emergency use
What is the first line of defense?
Skin
** Also Mucus membranes
Urine, gastric juices, and saliva
What is the second line of defense?
Internal defenses - Various fluid of the body have antimicrobial substances.
What is the third line of defense?
- Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells)
- Phagocytes & Macrophages
- Inflamation
What are the 4 signs of inflamation?
- Redness
- Heat
- Swelling
- Pain
What are the 3 stages of inflammation?
- Acute Phase (3-5 days)
- Sub-Acute Phase (3 days-several months)
- Maturation Stage (3 months to a full year or more)
Specific or Adaptive Immune responses is the very last line of defense, how does this happen?
It is acquired after time through exposure to specific pathogens.
B-Cells
Recognize antigens that are not self
T-Cells
Must be introduced to an antigen for it to recognize it as a foreign invader.
Artificially acquired immunity
Is immunization by vaccination
Clinical Connection for Immune System
- Bodywork can have a profound impact on health & healing
- The greatest impact of bodywork may be the facilitation of a client’s individual healing process.
- Wait at least 72 hours after an injury or sickness.
- Circulatory massage in contraindicated if a fever is present.
- Therapists must reschedule if they are presenting with a fever.
