What are the 2 sections of the respiratory system?
Upper respiratory tract & Lower respiratory tract
What is part of the Upper Respiratory Tract?
*Pharynx
Nose and Nasal cavity
Throat
-Common passageway for food, liquid, and air.
What is part of the Lower Respiratory Tract?
*Larynx Trachea Bronchial tree Lungs -Contains the Epiglottis
Where is the Trachea located?
Anterior to Esophagus
Called a windpipe
Bronchial Tree
The trachea splits into the right and left bronchi, and divides into smaller and smaller pasageways.
What is the smallest branches of the bronchial tree called?
bronchioles
Where do the bronchioles end at?
alveoli (air sacs)
What is the fluid filled membrane that surrounds the lung is called the what?
pleura
Breathing is called?
- Inhalation or inspiration - breathing in
- Exhalation or expiration - breathing out
- Contraction and relaxation of the skeletal muscles create the air pressure changes that power breathing.
What is the physiological process of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange called?
Respiration
The method of exchange is called?
Diffusion
What are the functions of the Respiratory System?
- Provides oxygen for cellular activity
- Removes carbon dioxide which helps maintain normal blood PH
- Eliminates heat and water through exhalation to help regulate temperature and fluid balance
- Contains receptors for the sense of smell
- Filters inspired air
- Produces vocal sounds
What is the Clinical Connection of the Respiratory System?
- Breath is the bridge between the conscious and subconscious
- Slow deep rythmic breathing can calm & nourish the mind and spirit as it provides the body with vital oxygen & relieves it of carbon dioxide.
- Breathing supports the movement of blood & lymph throughout the body.
- Breathing can reflect a client’s physical, mental, & emotional state. The pace and quality of breathing can be an important signal of a client’s discomfort, tension, or relaxation.
- The Olfactory Nerve (smelling nerve) carries info directly from sensors in the nose to the limbic system in the brain. This creates a strong connection between smell & memories & emotions.
Pathologies: Cold/Flu
Contraindicated
Cautions: Unless client is on the healing side of the process.
Pathologies: Emphyema
Indicated
Cautions: Gentle work with adjustments to client positioning.
Pathologies: Tuberculosis
Contraindicated
Pathologies: Lung Cancer
Indicated
Cautions: Strong caution due to treatments client may be receiving. Gentle work if cleared through health care team.
