After interstitial fluid passes into lymph vessels it is called _________
Lymph
Lymph Components
- Lymph is mostly water, but it contains a higher volume of metabolic waste and cellular debris the interstitial fluid.
- Lymphocytes (WBC) are also added to lymph as it passes through the lymph nodes.
Lymph Vessels
- Starts with a smaller vessels that gradually empty into larger and larger lymph vessels.
- Have openings with anchor filaments that allow fluid to enter the lymph system.
Primary Lymph Vessels
- Have valves that only allow lymph to flow one way.
2. Have lymph nodes located in intervals along the way.
Lymph trunks empty into either the ________________ or the ____________.
Right Lymphatic - 1/4 the body
Thoracic Duct - 3/4 the body
Right Lymphatic Duct
Returns fluid from the upper right quadrant.
Thoracic Duct
Returns fluid from the other 3/4 of the body.
Cisterna Chyli
Is a collecting well for the lymph from the lower extremities.
How many lymph nodes are there approximately?
600
Lymph Nodes
- Scattered throughout the body
- Occur in groups in the axilla and groin crease (catchments).
- Lymph nodes filter lymph
- Contain specialized immune cells to fight foreign invaders Lymphocytes. (B-cells, T-cells, Macrophages)
What are the functions of the Lymphatic system?
- Returns fluid and proteins to blood
- Absorbs and transports fats as well as lipid-soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) from the digestive tract.
- Immune responses via specialized lymphocyte activity.
