16
Q

What are the two different types of glands in the body?

A

Exocrine

Endocrine

17
Q

What do Exocrine Glands do?

A

Secrete substances that enter ducts, ultimately exit the body. (exo)
Examples: mucus, saliva, sweat, tears

18
Q

What do Endocrine Glands do?

A

Secretions enter interstitial fluid and then diffused into the blood stream. Stays in the body (endo)
Examples: all hormones such as growth, insulin, adrenaline, estrogen, testosterone.

19
Q

Hormones

A

The endocrine system that releases it’s hormones into the blood stream and are circulated throughout the entire body.

20
Q

Endocrine System Comparison

A
  1. Communicates by release of hormones into the blood stream.
  2. Reacts slowly to stimuli - seconds, days, years.
  3. Slower longer-lasting responses as hormones linger in blood.
  4. General widespread effects on many organs of the body.
21
Q

Functions of systems

A
  1. Body-wide communication and control of growth and development.
  2. Body-wide communication and control of metabolism.
  3. Homeostatic balance of blood.
22
Q

Clinical connection for Massage with Endocrine System

A

In most cases manual therapies only have an indirect effect on the endocrine system.

Body work can trigger the parasympathetic nervous system allowing balance to return to the endocrine system.

23
Q

Pathologies: Diabetes

A

Indicated

Cautions: timing of insulin and neuropathy.

24
Q

Pathologies: Hyperthyroidism

A

Indicated

Cautions: If skin damage is present.

25
Q

Pathologies: Thyroid Cancer

A

Indicated

Cautions: No massage if being treated with radioactive iodine.

26
Q

Pathologies: Pancreatic Cancer

A

Contraindicated, unless trained.

Caution: On undiagnosed non-specific midback pain
