to all those things that may concern us: our
health, our patients’ health and family, our patients’ problems,
circle of influence lies
with the circle of concern and relates to those
things that we have control over.
We need to be able to distinguish between the two.

Wasting too much
time and effort over things we cannot control can burn us out.
An individualised self-care plan for palliative care providers focuses on four self-care domains:
Physical
Emotional / cognitive
Relational
Spiritual.
The plan encourages a systematic approach to identifying warning signs of stress and burnout in
each area, and the development of protective practices.
Self awareness
Assists you to identify your strengths and weaknesses as well as to understand why
you react the way you do in certain situations.
Assists you to manage your emotions rather than being overwhelmed by them.
Self reflection can include questions like:
Physical: What is happening to my state of health and well-being?
Emotional: How do I feel during and after I finish work?
Perceptions: How do I make sense of my experiences at work?
Activities: How well do I balance my work and personal life?
Relationships: How has work impacted on my relationships (family, friends)?
Expertise: What am I learning in my work role?, and
Spiritual: How have my faith and personal meanings changed?
What personal characteristics assist the nurse to prevent
burnout when caring for the dying patient?
Appropriate training
A well developed personal philosophy, including:
A perception of being well supported, particularly in personal relationships
and family
Being part of an effective team
Inadequate training
Single status, with poor personal supports
Younger and engaged full-time in caregiving
Stressful life events, especially when accumulative and without
adequate resolution.
Past history of depression.
Compulsive caregiving, showing idealism and investing too much
into the effort.
Having too high expectations of oneself.
The habit of self-medication and the use of alcohol as a treatment
for problems.
A well developed personal philosophy, including:

prevention of burnout in the palliative situation?
Good communication between colleagues, e.g.
doctors and nurses treat each other with mutual
respect.
Good teamwork
Clear definition of roles
Supportive conditions of employment
Good staffing with appropriately qualified staff
Work overload with inadequate skills for the tasks at hand
Ambiguity of role
Conflict with other providers
Poor teamwork with poor communication, rivalries or lack of
leadership.
Poor management.
