CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT 2b Flashcards
PATIENT SKILLS FOR SELF-MANAGEMENT
Prevention and identification of risk factors Knowledge and understanding of condition and complications Monitoring signs and symptoms Contingency planning Self efficacy
Self-efficacy
is the confidence in one’s own
ability to be able to enact behavioural change
and to solve problems that arise. Patients’
need to be able to monitor their progress and
reward one-self for success.
Value:
one’s judgement of what is important in life, a principle or
standard of behaviour
Ethics
: moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour
Why is it important to understand our own
personal values as nurses?
-They may be in conflict with our patients personal
values
-It is important to understand how our values may
affect our behaviour
-As nurses we must reflect on how our feelings and
beliefs shape practice (NMBA standard 1.2, 2016)
-To practice ethically you must understand the impact
of your own values
How is ethics related to personal values?
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia adopted the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses in 2018.
This new Code of Ethics requires us as nurses to acknowledge patients:
• Rights; including right to respect, dignity and right to life
• Respect includes accepting patients values, customs and spiritual beliefs
These rights relate to all people regardless of the context of their care
HOW DOES THIS
RELATE TO
NURSING?
- Our personal values and beliefs may cause us to inadvertently behave in a judgemental manner - It is important to have insight in our own power and behaviour as healthcare workers and recognise and curtail prejudice and labelling - We may unknowingly ‘transfer’ our previous experiences or biases to our current patients which would be unethical - To practice ethically we must understand and be aware of our own values and how these might affect our delivery of care
