Kellogg advocated a host of natural health
practices he called “Biologic Living”
including vegetarianism, physical exercise,
sunshine, fresh air, colonic irrigation, various
forms of hydrotherapy and massage.
Kellogg’s book ‘The Art of Massage’ was
first published in 1895 .
1880’s massage was included in medical
treatments as massage:
- Performed by nurses, they included
massage in their training as a ‘back rub’.
Massage was of a short duration and
consisted mostly of Swedish or stroking
movements. - Australian practitioners were employed
assistants who trained for 2 years with the
Doctor and were called a Masseuse
